Chisago Lakes Invitational Tournament

Orono sent seven varsity wrestlers to compete in Chisago Lakes on Friday and came away with two champions and three other place winners. Marcus Ostvig (113) opened up with a 7-6 decision over Randall Huesman of Chaska-Chanhassan. A semi-final loss to Quayin Short of Simley sent Ostvig to the consolation finals where he won an overtime sudden victory over Bailey Thumes of Park 2-0.

Top seeded Jon Schmid (126) earned a trip to the finals with an opening round pin and a semi-final technical fall in the second period. In the final match, Schmid found himself down 4-7 with just 20 seconds to go in the match when he reversed Simley’s Aaron Hingst and earned three additional back points to win 9-7.

Nick Simafranca (132) pinned his opening round opponent in the second period. A subsequent loss in the semifinals sent Nick to the consolation finals where he ended up 4th for the tournament.

An opening round pin for Danny Striggow (152) set him up for semifinal match against the #2 ranked high School wrestler in the nation at 152, Griffin Parriott of New Prague. Parriott proved too much for the young Spartan. Striggow went on to win his consolation final match by injury default and earned third place honors.

Bobby Striggow (182) drew an opening round bye and pinned his Chisago Lakes opponent in the semifinal round. Striggow went on to earn a 4-1 decision over Cameron Schmitz of New Prague to place first.
